Here's an unusual red from Tuscany, made from almost equal proportions of colorino, sangiovese and malvasia nera. That first grape has become a trivial player in the region next to dominant sangiovese and was historically used mainly to impart dark colour thanks to its thick, deeply pigmented skins. (The same holds true to some extent of malvasia nera.) Colorino adds not only colour here but also structure and chewy tannins. The wine is brimming with dark fruit notes, leather and licorice on a velvety texture. Great for steak, it should evolve well for up to five years in the cellar. To be released July 9, 2016, in Ontario Vintages stores.
