POUNDS DROPPED: 47
My turning point: Last November, I listened to a radio interview with author Gary Taubes about his new book, Why We Get Fat, and subsequently added the book to my Christmas wish list. My wife and I both read the book over the Christmas holidays and starting in the mid-January (2012) I began eating an LCHF (low carb high fat) diet. I realized it might just be possible to lose weight and get healthier without becoming a marathon runner.
My method: Starting in January, I made big changes to my diet. I didn’t exercise more or take up a new activity – my change was all about what I ate. I started to avoid virtually all foods high in carbohydrates (potatoes, rice, bread etc.) and steered clear of sugars, too. The biggest meal change was breakfast, which used to be coffee, orange juice, toast and cereal. Now breakfast is bacon, sausage, eggs, cheese and coffee (thankfully no carbs in coffee). I don’t count calories, eat when I am hungry and eat until I am satisfied (no need to feel hungry).
My friends and colleagues expressed some concern that my “bacon” diet would elevate my cholesterol and blood pressure. But I feel so much better. My energy is higher and day-to-day activities are easier. I’ve also met with my doctor who showed me my blood pressure has improved dramatically and my blood cholesterol results are better.
My kryptonite: There are a number of sweet treats that I miss (including pie, candy etc.), but salty snacks are my weakness. Once in a while I have a few potato chips (yes I can eat just one!), but I normally satisfy my salty craving with nuts.
