Prince Edward Island families who are receiving medical help with their attempts to have children are calling on the province's health agency to replace a departing fertility specialist.

Gynecologist and obstetrician Beverly Brodie has announced she's closing her practice on July 15. Lindsay Andrews, who is receiving hormonal treatments from Brodie, says when Brodie leaves women in Prince Edward Island will have to travel off-island for all fertility treatment services.

Andrews has gathered 1,100 signatures petitioning Health PEI to find a replacement.

Currently, in vitro fertilization is not offered in PEI, but women who want this service can get preliminary tests and preparatory hormone and fertility treatments through Brodie's office.

Andrews says the services Brodie provided required almost daily follow-up, and without a replacement she may have to spend a month or longer in another province to receive the same treatments.
