A Yukon MLA wants the territorial government to ban energy drinks in schools.
Darius Elias says the drinks are loaded with caffeine and aren't safe for children.
He says not enough is known about the health risks of the popular drinks and they should be prohibited within the school system.
Elias would also like to see the Yukon government work with Health Canada to regulate all consumption of energy drinks.
The federal body says children are at a greater risk of behavioural effects from too much caffeine and Elias is seeking Yukon legislation to restrict purchase of energy drinks to those over 18.
Most energy drinks contain between 70 and 300 milligrams of caffeine, although Health Canada sets maximum caffeine levels for 10 to 12 year olds at no more than 85 milligrams per day - about the equivalent of two cans of cola.Report Typo/Error
