The Globe and Mail was granted special access to the critical-care unit at Toronto's Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and followed patients and families as they confronted one of the most complex questions in health care: How does one prepare for the end of life? The Pritchard family tells their story of Betty, 86, who penned her wishes on a piece of paper, letting her family know what she wanted done if she became critically ill. That moment came when she fell sideways down the stairs.
