If you're like me, you may have found the early onslaught of glittery holiday decor in many fall store displays off-putting, even if it wasn't autumn. Whether your look is modern or traditional, city chic or country casual, there are simple, elegant and far from clichéd ways to embrace and celebrate the spirit of the season without feeling like you're trapped under a mountain of faux snow and tinsel.
THE LOOK
My No. 1 rule is to keep holiday decor real, fresh and restrained. I hung five wreaths made of different natural materials on removable adhesive hooks to make the most of a large space over a fireplace. FLICKERING FLAMES
No fireplace? No problem. Even if you don’t have a functioning fireplace, you can create the same effect by assembling a collection of candlesticks on a sideboard, buffet or console. MAKE YOUR OWN TRADITIONS

DON’T OVERLOOK THE OUTDOORS
Place a few hurricane candles on a garden table or path for a warm, candlelit glow. Dress up a single variety of tree or bush (such as these long-needled Jack pines) with oversized silver orbs and tiny white lights for some sparkle in the snow. LOAD ‘EM UP
My approach to tree ornaments is definitely “more is more.” They can be vintage or new, from fancy boutiques or the hardware store.
