Bulletproof updos and glittery eyeshadow are as fresh as last year's fruitcake. This season, it's tousled tresses and ultra-simple makeup that signal festive style
Mussed yet mesmerizing
FOR THE HAIR 1. Spritz hair with sea-salt spray and blow-dry, tousling with your hands to enhance natural texture. 2. Apply dry shampoo to give hair a matte finish. 3. Pull hair to one side, leaving out a few stray pieces to frame the face. 4. To create a fishtail braid, part the hair into two equal sections. Grab a small piece from underneath one of the sections and cross diagonally over the hair, adding it to the opposite section. Continue to cross pieces loosely over one another down the length of the hair to form the braid. 5. Stop two or three inches from the end of the strands and secure with a clear hair elastic. FOR THE FACE: 1. Line lips with a lip pencil in the same orange-red shade as your lipstick, then apply a matte-finish lipstick with a brush and blot well. 2. Apply a second layer of lipstick and blot again. Set with powder. 3. Curl lashes and swipe with black mascara to complete the look. Theyskens Theory gold beaded tank, $800, Dannijo earrings, $380 at Holt Renfrew (www.holtrenfrew.com).
Supersoft and tousled
FOR THE HAIR: 1. Apply moisturizing hair cream to give tresses a smooth finish, then blow-dry. 2. Using a curling iron with a 1½-inch barrel, curl the entire head of hair by wrapping 2-inch sections around the iron one at a time. Spray each curled section with an anti-humidity hairspray as you go. 3. Brush out curls to create a loose, slightly messy texture. 4. Spritz all over with an anti-humidity hairspray for added hold. FOR THE FACE: 1. Line the eyes, top and bottom, with a brown pencil, then smudge and blend with a pointed crease brush. 2. Apply brown eyeshadow over the blended pencil on the top and bottom lashes and blend well with the brush. Apply the same shadow to the crease. 3. Using a fresh brush to avoid muddying the effect, cover the full part of the lid, from crease to top lash line, with a second shadow a few shades lighter than the first. 4. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with a lightly frosted white or beige shadow. 5. Curl lashes and swipe on two coats of black mascara for a dramatic nighttime finish. 6. Play down lips with a subtle pink lipstick in a semi-gloss finish for a touch of shine. Chloé lace blouse, $1,395, Cara necklaces, $95 each at Holt Renfrew (www.holtrenfrew.com).
Up and easy
FOR THE HAIR: 1. To amplify its natural texture, wash and air-dry hair, then finger-comb it away from the face instead of using a brush. 2. Pull hair back, loosely gathering it with fingertips at the centre back of the head and securing it with a hair elastic. 3. Form a ponytail by pulling hair through the elastic. On the last pull-through, do not pull hair all the way out, stopping a few inches before the ends pass through the elastic to form a bun. Spread the hair to give the bun volume. 4. Twist loose ends around the body of the bun and secure them with hair pins. 5. Mist with a flexible-hold hairspray. FOR THE FACE: 1. Apply an even layer of BB cream to the face to prime and moisturize skin. 2. Sweep a highlighter from cheekbone to temple to brow bone, forming the shape of a C. 3. Line the lips with a clear lip liner, then apply a dark wine or oxblood lipstick overtop and blot. Finish with a dot of gloss for added sheen.
