I have an open-concept floor plan. Can I decorate in different styles in different parts of the house?
The open-concept floor plan is great for living in, but there are drawbacks.
Because there is no real definition between rooms, it is very difficult to decorate each space in a different style. Doing so will likely result in a disjointed home with rooms that don’t flow together. (But if you insist, leave a buffer room between the ones with clashing decor.) I prefer a neutral background and for the decor to be consistent throughout so that the space feels seamless.
But that doesn’t mean that you have to stick to one style; even in traditional homes, I prefer a mix of modern and antique, classic and trendy, country and urban. We’re living in a global society and a sophisticated space incorporating objects from your travels is a reflection of your personality. Blend these experiences throughout your home and you’ll end up with different looks in different areas and a new style will be born: your own.Report Typo/Error
