The word “tie-dye” may bring to mind garish splotches of various hues, bleeding together as if in a kaleidoscope. But the new Tie Dye collection of wool rugs from Elte Market is far more debonair. It took designer Jamie Metrick a full two years to perfect the collection. “At first, we couldn’t quite get the electric colours we were looking for,” Metrick said. “Then we had to contend with issues with blotchiness.

And then, finally, it took a lot of time and experimentation to get the right sheen on the wool.” Inspired by Elte’s Second Life collection of redyed antique rugs, the Tie Dye collection palette includes lime green, fuchsia and royal blue (shown) and come s in sizes ranging from 1.5 to more than four metres in length. How does Elte Market manage to tie-dye a four-metre-long rug? “It’s a long-developed secret. That’s part of the magic,” Metrick said. From $295 through eltemkt.com
