Most ceiling fans are scene-stealers – and not in a good way. Jangly and clunky-looking, there's always that moment where it feels like the entire contraption is about to break free mid-spin and land on your head.

Blow, created in 1997 by the acclaimed sculptor Ferdi Giardini for the Italian lighting-design firm Luceplan, however, is the wallflower of ceiling fans, content to do its business quietly and elegantly.

But there's a reason it's been a darling of the design set for 17 years. Blow sports transparent, colourful plastic blades in green, blue, orange or clear (these can be mixed at whim) that silently swoop at a super-quick rate due to an exceptionally quiet motor mounted on ball bearings inside the unit.

Giardini, who calls himself "a creator of shape," took his inspiration for the blades from a harbinger of summer: dragonfly wings. Bring on the warm weather.
