Yes, it turns out that – in addition to acting, fatherhood, philanthropy and a mystifying role as a Chanel No. 5 spokesman – Angelina Jolie’s better half is an architecture and interior-design nut. And next week, he will unveil his own line of furniture. Not, let’s be clear, decor with a Brad stamp of approval; these are pieces straight from the doodles of the mega-celebrity himself.
“I found Wright in college, when looking for a lazy two-point credit to get out of French,” Mr. Pitt told Architectural Digest, which has spotlighted the pieces he has created. “It forever changed my life.”
Whether Mr. Pitt will, in turn, change yours depends on your pocketbook: The star’s collaborator, a designer known for modern and art deco pieces named Frank Pollaro, says prices will be “typically at the highest end of the custom-furnishings scale … even north of that.”
Taste is also a factor: early critics have dismissed Mr. Pitt’s pieces as “overwrought” and “arrogant” – with one saying his marble bath for two looks like an ashtray. (His massive bed certainly has design lines about as clear as his monologue for perfume: “Plans disappear, dreams take over.” Indeed.)
Still, Mr. Pitt isn’t the only rich and famous peddler of a passion project. Last month, Johnny Depp, who never met a writer he didn’t want to play on film, announced that he would be launching his own publishing imprint with HarperCollins. Earlier this year, Iron Maiden front man Bruce Dickinson, a long-time commercial pilot, launched an aircraft-maintenance business in South Wales. Venus Williams is a fellow decor nerd with an interior-design business.
At least Mr. Pitt hasn’t created yet another celebrity clothing line. And he’s not letting his designer status go to his head. When asked by Architectural Digest how he feels about the label furniture designer, he said: “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
