Benchmark community is a green cut above

Adera launches phase two of its four-building Green development in south Burnaby tomorrow, a project that has already set a new benchmark for B.C. developers.

The 325-home community is the first residential building project to achieve BuiltGreen gold status - the highest standing for energy conservation and green design designated by the Home Builders Association of B.C. and Alberta.

"Adera has made a commitment to set new benchmarks for sustainable residential design," says Eric Andreasen, Adera's vice president of marketing and sales.

"Attitudes have changed dramatically in the last few years. Consumers don't debate the importance of green features - they expect and demand them.

Adera is taking the lead in green development not only because of a responsibility to the planet, but because sustainability has become a top priority for new home buyers."

Mr. Andreasen sees sustainable design not only as a necessary trend but an excellent investment for home buyers.

"What often goes missed is the fact that a product that's built using these standards will sell for more in a number of years - it retains its value based on the original concept," he says.

Adera is also the first builder to sign up for B.C Hydro's revamped Power Smart New Home Program.

"We envision Green to be a wholly sustainable development. The homes themselves are being built to Gold BuiltGreen standards, but Green goes beyond the call of duty," says Mr. Andreasen.

The four-building development has incorporated all of the expected green design aspects such as Energy Star windows and appliances, the use of local recycled materials, low emissions paint and carpets, motion censored lighting and a rainwater irrigation system. But it goes beyond, with features that Mr. Andreasen believes reflect the development's connectedness to the surrounding environment.

Those features included a Co-operative Auto Network program, which includes six on-site vehicles, including two hybrids, native plant landscaping, and a pledge to support the Burnaby Streamkeepers' initiatives to protect the neighbouring stream.

Green is set between a 100-acre protected forest and a 22-acre community park, yet it is just steps from cafes, shops and the Edmonds Skytrain Station.

"This project leverages a superb location next to untampered wilderness and parlays that into a sustainable project that was constructed using green practices," says Mr. Andreasen.
