If you're like me, and like most women, you end up wearing only about 20 per cent of the clothes hanging in your closet - though I think social media are forcing us to find new things to wear. I've had to retire a favourite dress after wearing it to two weddings and another event in June. I thought I'd be safe, since they involved three different circles of friends, but then I got tagged in numerous Facebook pictures, and it appears as though I have only one outfit.

But you don't need to rush out and buy something new. It's likely that, with some tweaks, the bulk of all of our wardrobes is workable. However, if you're not a self-professed fashionista, it can be hard to get it right.

But what if you could have your own personal wardrobe consultant to help you work with what you have? Enter the free iPhone app, Ask a Stylist. Here's how it works: Take a picture of the clothing item or outfit in question. Choose your destination (maybe work, or a wedding). Select a stylist. Address your fashion query (Will these shoes work with this dress? Is this jacket still in style?). Send.

You will have your answer within minutes.

Your stylist may also recommend other accessories or clothing items to complement your look - items you may already have hanging around at the back of your closet. If you do have to purchase a few new minor things, at least you're equipped with a thoughtful list to take on your next shopping trip.
