Take a page from the 20th century – a 10-week guide on how to bring back the adventure of summer.

In 2009, an academic noted that Kick the Can was disappearing – "becoming less and less known to each generation," as outdoor and unstructured play dwindles, in his words.

How could we as a society allow something as fundamentally great as Kick the Can vanish? Parents, it's time to right this wrong.

Gather your children and as many of their friends as possible (as always with these games, the more the better). Explain the rules and be "It" in a practice run. Then get out of the way.

If all is still right with the universe, if kids can still get hooked on a game of cunning and stealth and running around a neighbourhood, then all you should hear for a few hours is gleeful screaming. And a can being kicked.
