The MudGirls are an all-woman collective who build natural structures using materials such as straw-bale, driftwood adobe, cordwood and recycled items, such as car tires. The women have been hired for such projects as homes, cabins, outhouses and cob-ovens.People gathered from various parts of Canada and as far Vermont for this year’s MudGirls workshop. The 15 participants, led by MudGirls Molly Murphy and Sheera Cipilinski, spent May 7 to 12 on the construction of a cob house on Saltspring Island. The workshop consisted of learning various natural building techniques that included making the cob, building walls and installing windows. The participants applied the techniques as the days progressed and the structure started to take shape.Ms. Murphy has been living in a cob house on Saltspring since 2009, sharing it with her husband and two children. The house looks more like a work of art than a shelter. Many of the materials came from the environment around her home – and she used recycled tires as roof shingles.
