Even on a good day, parenting can feel like one giant game of dodgeball, with shots fired from every corner of the blogosphere.

Some are easily deflected ("I only feed my child organic"), some result in slight bruising ("She's not reading yet? That's … normal I'm sure"), some are kill shots ("I would have never sleep-trained at that age").

That's why reading Victoria Fedden's blog, Wide Lawns and Narrow Minds, specifically the post titled "If 70s Moms Had Blogs," was a refreshing reminder of how ridiculous the escalation of the Mommy Wars has become.

"This morning, I got up and Jennifer and Kimberly were eating Pop Rocks in front of the TV set watching Captain Kangaroo while Matt was already out in the backyard with a glass of Tang. I sat down and had a cigarette," it starts. "Halfway through my smoke, I went and got the baby, changed its Pamper and made it a bottle of formula. Then I put it in the walker so I could vacuum in peace while the other three kids went outside."

Fedden, who has a three-year-old daughter and started the blog in 2005, goes on to poke fun at our obsessions with supervised play, sunscreen and responding to every pint-sized whim. Right. Reality-check time. We all grew up with Tang and Pop Rocks, were shoved outside when our parents needed space, and we turned out okay. Sometimes taking a page out of the history books – even a fake one – is all the advice you need.
