Hating Anne Hathaway: Is the Oscar backlash really necessary?

Only a couple years ago, Anne Hathaway was an Oscar-night darling, having tried her best to rescue the desperately unfunny award show she co-hosted with James Franco. Say what you will about the 2011 Academy Awards, but many found Hathaway quirky, endearing and smarter than her script allowed her to be.

But it seemed last night there were more Oscar watchers heckling the actress than cheering her on. (And it wasn't just her, um, stiff-looking dress either.)

Twitter users were sneering at Hathaway last night, even before she scooped up the golden statuette for her role in the film version of the musical Les Misérables .

"already so annoyed at anne hathaway's acceptance speech," one Twitter user wrote before the award show was well under way.

Added another: "Anne Hathaway reminds me of that kid in school all the other kids didn't really like but all the teachers loved."

As the night continued, the hate heaped on the actress became a trending topic itself. "My feed is filled w/ people asking why other people hate Anne Hathaway, but no one actually hating Anne Hathaway," tweeted @drgrist.

"What the hell did Anne Hathaway do? People sure seem to hate her," @amellywood wrote.

So why hate her indeed?

According to Hollywood.com, part of it is because she comes across as overeager and insincere.

"One of the common gripes about Hathaway is that she makes everything all about her, even when trying to come off as sweet and humble," Hollywood.com writer Brian Moylan wrote.

As the Examiner.com reported, radio shock-jockey Howard Stern gave his own assessment earlier this year, after Hathaway won the SAG Award: "Let me sum up why people hate Anne Hathaway. … First of all. She gets a speechwriter to write her speech. … She's overly dramatic at these award shows. … She's always, always out of breath. … She's even acting when she's winning an award."
