That sad, muffled noise you hear is the sound of millions of teenage female hearts breaking all over the world.

As reported by People, Us Weekly and countless other media outlets, One Direction member Zayn Malik has gotten engaged to pop singer Perrie Edwards. Both are 20 years old.

According to most sources, the handsome Malik reportedly proposed last weekend to Edwards, a member of the all-girl group Little Mix.

"Zayn and Perrie are engaged, but any further detail regarding their relationship is private," One Direction's label representative told People.

Unofficial confirmation of the couple's engagement came Monday evening when fans and paparazzi spotted the sparkly three-stone diamond ring adorning Edwards' ring finger at the London premiere of Malik's documentary film One Direction: This Is Us.

On Wednesday, Edwards' mother Debbie Duffy officially announced the engagement during an interview with the British radio program The Gary and Lisa Show.

"It's true," said Duffy. "They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely… it's wonderful because Zayn's absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces and it's just perfect. They just get on so well together and they understand each other so it's just fabulous!"

The female singing trio Little Mix came together for the British TV talent-search series The X Factor in 2011 and won the overall competition. One Direction placed third in the 2010 season of X Factor but have since gone on to chart-topping success all over the world.

Malik and Edwards began dating in December, 2011. Their relationship became official in April, 2012, according to Us Weekly, and the couple moved in together last February.

And when it came to popping the big question, Malik demonstrated that he was an old-fashioned type of chap.

"He did the traditional asking me and then asking his mum and dad and everything, and it was fabulous, just lovely," said Duffy. "I was like a little emotional and, like, ahhhhhh, it was so lovely and I just thought it was adorable."

Will Malik's engagement help or hurt the success of One Direction: This Is Us, which lands in North American theatres next Friday? Only Monday's box-office receipts will tell.
