According to his Craiglist ads, Christopher Lee is a "very fit fun classy" guy, who promises "not to disappoint" the ladies looking for love online. He's a divorced lobbyist who has had his fair share of disappointments on the dating scene. If you're lucky, he'll send you a shirtless photo. In reality, he's Christopher Lee — a father, husband and Republican New York Congressman, best known for his push for family values and firm stance against federal funding of abortion.
According to this Gawker investigation, Lee sent several short email messages — including this photo — to one woman in a series of online flirtations. When she discovered he wasn't who he said he was, the scorned woman promptly forwarded the correspondence on to Gawker.
Since then, the Congressman has (not surprisingly) made the decision to resign, stating:
"The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately."
Here's what is surprising: The speed at which his resignation occured, Lee's utter failure to conceal his identity (a fake name and an alternate e-mail would've been helpful?) and the quick damage control over at the Republican camp.
There have been countless powerful men caught cheating, and this scandal isn't particularly outrageous. In fact, a shirtless cellphone photo and a few juicy emails are pretty PG-13 when you consider Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, and of course, the master of political sex scandals, silver fox Bill Clinton.
What do you think: Are you surprised by this latest scandal — and the lack of effort Lee put forth to cover up his cheating attempts?
Is there a lesson to be had here, or is this just another political sex scandal to add to a very long list?Report Typo/Error
