Being gay remains an uphill battle in the United States. For all the advances made by the LGBT community in recent years, the general public still seems slow to accept anyone in this community – and maybe even a bit slower in New Jersey.
Gawker recounts an incident at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J., last week that has people talking.
Server Dayna Morales was doing her job when she approached a table occupied by a couple and their two small children. As Morales later related on the website haveagayday.org, she sensed there was something amiss from the beginning.
"I introduce myself and tell them my name is Dayna," she wrote. "The mom proceeds to look at me and say, "oh I thought you were gonna say your name is Dan. You sure surprised us!' "
A former U.S. Marine, Morales took the cheap shot and served the couple their meal without incident, but the other shoe dropped when it came to settling the $93.55 tab.
In lieu of a tip, the couple wrote the following message: "Sorry, I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life."
Not surprisingly, Morales was steamed and expressed her rage in an e-mail that was widely circulated on Facebook.
In her words: "I am THOROUGHLY offended mad pissed off and hurt that THIS is what her kids will grow up learning and that I served in the Marines to keep ignorant people like them free."
Although it's small consolation, many Facebook followers voiced their disgust with the couple. Morales thanked them for their support, but also added the following coda: "Not gonna lie if kids weren't there it would have been a totally different story."
Even the most ignorant American should know you don't mess with a Marine.
