Want to sleep with snacks? Head to The Food Hotel

Globe and Mail Update

Forget the Ice Hotel. Try digesting the concept of Germany’s Food Hotel.

The Food Hotel, in the eastern city of Neuwied, is furnished with stools made of beer crates, cushions that look like biscuits and chairs that resemble shopping carts.

It’s “the next best thing to sleeping in the supermarket aisle,” Reuters reports.

Each of the hotel’s unique bedrooms was designed by leading household brands, such as Dr. Oetker, candy maker Ferrero and brewer Veltins, Reuters says. In exchange for nearly carte blanch power to decorate the rooms however they wanted, the food and drink companies contributed to the cost of the hotel’s construction.

A tea-themed bedroom, put together by German tea company Messmer, is decorated with tea crates and images of exotic tea plantations, while a suite designed by Ferrero recreates the set from the company’s television advertisement for coconut candies, complete with palm trees, summer hats and photos of sandy beaches. Another bedroom set up by German potato-chip maker Chico allows visitors to munch on snacks while partying under a disco ball. And for hungry guests, the hotel also houses a full-scale supermarket.

“Guests are free to choose which snacks, beverages and marketing campaigns they would like to spend the night with,” Reuters says, adding the hotel charges around $125 a night.

What we’d like to know is who’s paying to sleep among the country’s biggest food marketers. That’s something to chew on.
