What are these guys doing on a billboard about ‘remarkable women’? Add to ...

If you were advertising a wall of honour for “remarkable women” on a giant billboard, you’d think the gender of the people featured prominently on that billboard would be a no-brainer. Some, um, remarkable women, perhaps?

Instead, Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax is getting some online ribbing for the decision to put three “grinning guys,” as Gawker put it, on a public advertisement for its Women’s Wall of Honour. The billboard features two local businessmen and former provincial Liberal leader Danny Graham, who all donated to the university.

A spokesman at the university explained to The Chronicle Herald that many women had also donated to the project – which will in December, 2014 – but it wanted to appeal to another demographic in its ad – that other demographic apparently being men. And especially because Mother’s Day was coming. Not quite getting the connection – is donating to a women’s wall of honour something sons would do for their moms, but not daughters?

The billboard may be for the guys, the university explains, but the online and print ads will feature both genders. (That’s because while both genders read, only men drive, right?) But as Gawker points out, even on the project’s website Graham and gang get top kudos. “Women accomplish many things,” the reader is told, in case they weren’t sure. “Most go without recognition.” In response, one aggrieved Gawker reader made this valid point: “Of course women accomplish things, we exist don’t we?”

Now, we’re just having a bit of fun with Mount Saint Vincent. We know they didn’t mean anything by it. But in cases like this, when you have clearly botched things, it’s probably best just say sorry, take down the sign and leave Mother’s Day out of it.
