It's a cool, refreshing summer drink. To bartenders, it's a huge inconvenience and they wish you would stop ordering it.

The drink in question is the mojito, a Cuban libation made with rum, sugar, lime juice, soda and, of course, mint. A favourite of Ernest Hemingway, a proper mojito should be made with mint that has been freshly crushed.

According to the New York Post, however, bartenders are sick and tired of assembling the drink and have taken to coming up with any excuse not to have to mix up another one. The process is simply too long, messy and just plain annoying, they say.

For instance, some bartenders say they don't have the right ingredients on hand while others tell the customer ordering the drink that the mojito is simply not cool anymore.

One bartender interviewed by the Post said it's a good idea to steer clear of making them because mojitos are "like a disease." That is, once one person sees one, everybody wants one and it spreads.

Of course, mojitos aren't the only problem. Who hasn't ordered a Caesar, only to be told the bar doesn't have Clamato juice on hand?

At the same time, the current frenzy around mixologists who are serving up molecular cocktails and drinks containing more ingredients than your main course meal also means not everyone is sick of making a complicated cocktail.
