Destination Buenos Aires

THE PARTY: ZIZEK

Since M.I.A.’s Brazilian baile funk-tinged tracks hit dance floors nearly five years ago, North American partygoers have steadily trained their ears southward for the latest in club sounds.

Party people, then, need look no further than Zizek, Buenos Aires’ hottest DJ collective. The recipe: Take Latin cumbia, a traditional 4/4 folk dance, mash it up with hip hop, dancehall and reggaeton, and voilà – cumbia digital. The boys behind Zizek have been quietly creating a buzz since 2006 with their weekly engagements, and now the rest of the world has caught on to the new sound of Argentina.

The lucky ones caught their raucous, energetic sets in Montreal and Toronto this past spring. Although their current tour takes them across Europe, you can be sure to catch them moving young Argentines when they triumphantly return home. zzkclub.com for more information and free mixtapes.

THE MUSIC

Meet some of the Argentine DJs and musicians behind Zizek:

  1. Tremor – Viajante

This trio’s minimalist vibe lets their Latin instruments do the talking.
  2. Villa Diamante – Calle 13 v. M.I.A.

What you get when you mash-up Latin Grammy award winners with Paper Planes. Find his mashups at www.diamantestyle.com.ar
  3. Fauna – Las Mil Caras (Canibal)

Two MCs from the Andes rap over their cumbia creations.
  4. El Remolón – La Bonita

Cumbia filters through minimalist techno and reggaeton for a pretty pop sound.
  5. King Coya – Cumbiatron

Slowed-down robotic beats fit the 4/4 tempo like a steel glove.
  6. Chancha Via Circuito – Zorzal

One of the youngest DJs, his music takes on a hypnotic mood. 
