The exterior of this sophisticated suite hotel hardly seeks the attention of casual passersby at the busy Piazza Pasquino in Rome. There is no sign on its simple 17th-century façade, and the entrance leads into a bar, instead of a traditional hotel lobby. The design reflects the hospitality vision of G-Rough’s founders, hotelier Emanuele Garosci, who opened Palazzina G in Venice in 2009, and entrepreneur Gabriele Salini, a seventh-generation Roman. Hidden in the heart of the historic Parione district, this hip, high-end retreat focuses on privacy and authenticity.

The unusual name emerged in the process of restoring the five-storey apartment building: G links the Rome hotel to its sister Venetian property, while Rough stems from the decision to strip back the walls and leave them bare.

Once inside, guests will discover a 10-suite hotel inspired by Italian design. Luxury here is not flaunted, but refined.

Location, location

Steps away from Piazza Navona, the location is about as central as possible. Parione district is home not only to gorgeous baroque fountains and churches with Caravaggio paintings, but also to some of Rome’s liveliest cafés and restaurants. Many major attractions, such as the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain, are within a 15-minute walking distance, while you can reach the Colosseum and Vatican Museums in less than half an hour by foot, or much more quickly by cab.

Design

In contrast with G-Rough’s understated exterior, its interior details are meticulously crafted, from an impressive collection of antique mid-century furniture, to custom-made key rings with hand-drawn portraits. Traditional and contemporary design elements blend in surprising harmony – think vintage brass faucets on mirror glass tiles and baroque wall statues next to modern murals. Each suite is named after an Italian modernist designer and appointed with appropriate furniture: expect Parisi tables in Ico, Ponti chairs in Gio and Sarfatti chandeliers in Gino.

Best amenity

Space is possibly the biggest luxury in tight city centres of old European towns, and, given its location, G-Rough pleasantly surprises with sizable living rooms and bedrooms. Generous bathrooms include separate areas for the sink and toilet, beautifully designed showers with Seletti tiles and stand-alone claw-foot bathtubs.

Eat in or eat out?

With terrific cappuccinos and delicious pastries, G-Rough is an excellent spot for a classic continental breakfast, either in your suite or in the charming sitting room downstairs. For lunch and dinner ideas, check out the Owner’s Tips booklet provided in your room, or ask staff members for their favourites. Many excellent options are available within a five-minute walk, including traditional homemade pasta in the causal Osteria da Fortunata and Italian style seafood in the elegant Pierluigi.

If I could change one thing

Lively as it is, Piazza Pasquino buzzes with the sounds of Vespas and conversations deep into the night. While living rooms face the street and bedrooms are further in the back, it would have been nice if there was an actual door to close in between them. A bathroom door would also come in handy, perhaps especially for those who bring along small children, to secure a few uninterrupted minutes in that exquisite shower.
