Skip the lobby bar. Walk the hotel’s dog instead

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

You left Brockton, your Boston terrier, at the kennel before you jetted off on vacation, but who says your week away has to be pooch-free?

Those in need of some canine companionship when travelling can find it at 10 Fairmont hotel locations – including five in Canada – that have welcomed resident dogs to their staff.

Guests at the Fairmont Pittsburgh are greeted in the lobby by resident boxer/Labrador retriever Edie’s big brown eyes. If those checked in at Le Manoir Richelieu in Quebec need a morning running companion, they can take Jordy – a black labrador – out for a jog around the block.

The warm reception of Canada’s four-legged staff members a few years ago prompted Fairmont to introduce dog ambassadors in the United States, Kenya and Scotland. Mavis and Beau, the Fairmont Vancouver’s two yellow labrador golden retrievers and two of the first Fairmont dogs, have moved beyond their duties as playmates and also use their pedigreed palates to select dishes for the hotel’s pet menu.

And for the pet-less who fall in love during their hotel stays: Yes, all the Fairmont dogs have e-mail addresses.
