Sorry about all of this.
I thought I had bought out my local travel store in preparation for my Belizean adventures, but it turned out I was woefully ill-equipped. Here's what my fellow travellers brought along, that I wished I had:
Kayak for hours a day and you’ll soon realize that the plastic seat is not your friend. Two savvy travellers came prepared with Discovery kayak back rests by SealLine. Bring one. Your tailbone will thank you. $49.95 US, cascadedesigns.com
These wet shoes are great for jungle trekking and river crossing. $85 US, columbia.com
Headlamps are crucial for avoiding the many hermit crabs sleeping in the sand after the sun goes down. (Remember, at least one night, in more rustic accommodations, you’ll trek through the sand to get to the washroom after dark.) Petzl headlamp, $39.95 US, rei.com
A quick-drying lightweight shirt with sleeves is essential for much-needed sun cover while snorkelling. $39.95 US rei.com
And don't forget: fingerless paddling gloves. I bought a pair from MEC before I left, and they came in handy on the water - and in the cave. $10 CDN, mec.ca
