LOBBY LUXE

Toronto - Proving that cocktail hour isn’t all about the drink, dbar at the Four Seasons Toronto takes lobby-level dining to gourmet heights. Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, the elegant watering hole looks out over posh Yorkville through six-metre floor-to-ceiling windows. Arrive well before 6 p.m. to snag a table (especially on weekends) and take your time navigating the extensive menu, which was crafted by acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud. Such unexpected offerings as herb-filled falafel, Spanish anchovies and vodka-cured tuna are standouts on the snack list, while The Firehouse #312, a hearty burger topped with house-made barbecued pulled pork and jalapeno mayonnaise, pays homage to the neighbouring Yorkville Fire Hall. Pair your choice with a craft beer (locally made Steam Whistle and Tankhouse ales are on tap) or one of resident mixologist Albert Kirby’s inventive seasonal cocktails, which include Brutes, a green variation on the classic Caesar. fourseasons.com

LENNOX BEHIND THE LENS

Manchester - Singer-songwriter Annie Lennox shows off her artsy depictions of northern England in Glorious Manford Salchester, a photo exhibit at The Lowry Hotel. Lennox made good use of her iPhone camera during her travels through the historic cities of Manchester and Salford and the resulting colourful collages portray the contrast between the cities. Shiny glass skyscrapers and crumbling Victorian-era brick buildings, graffiti-laden streets, weed-covered railway bridges and tacky neon juxtapose with close-ups of bright flowers. Lennox fans can purchase the signed limited-edition prints, which start at $320. The exhibit runs until Nov. 27. commecaart.com

GOOEY GOODNESS

New York - Melt Shop’s recently opened Chelsea outlet offers up a whole new way to experience a grilled cheese sandwich. The diner creates the same variations as its sister restaurant in midtown Manhattan, but the downtown location gets weirder. The Chelsea Melt Shop still serves the “Award Winner” with with blue cheese, cheddar, thick-cut bacon and cranberry jam, but why not try its ultimate comfort food hit: “Thanksgiving Dinner” (brie, smoked turkey, caramelized onions and cranberry jam). And while you’re at it, add a side of tater tots and a hand-spun vanilla shake. meltshopnyc.com

A ROOFTOP RETREAT

Istanbul - Guests get sweeping views of the historic strait that divides Europe and Asia from bed to bath in Gezi Bosphorus’ new Sky Suites. The hotel’s four new rooftop rooms are set high above the frenetic bustle of nearby Taksim Square. Although you can take in all the action from the private 215-square-foot terrace, with a glass of wine by the fireplace, or while having breakfast in bed, the most indulgent vantage point is from the deep jacuzzi tub that’s set window-side. If you can pry yourself away, make your way to the hotel spa for a salt scrub and a contemporary take on the Turkish bath experience. designhotels.com
