Where to stay

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

THE INN ON FERRY

The Ferry Street Historic District offers a glimpse of the Detroit that was, an intact stretch of Victorian mansions just below the cultural district. The Inn offers 40 rooms in four elegantly restored homes and two coach houses, and includes breakfast and shuttle services. Rates from $143, 84 East Ferry St.; 313-871-6000; innonferrystreet.com

WESTIN BOOK CADILLAC HOTEL

This “grande dame” was the tallest hotel in the world when built in 1924 but was derelict until about three years ago. A $213-million renovation brought it back to fabulous. And Michael Symons’s restaurant Roast is a spectacular destination on its own, with a passionate set of local regulars mixed with an international crowd. This hotel is Hollywood’s pied-a-terre in Detroit, so keep your celebrity-spotting eyes open. Rates from $175 weekends, $237 weekdays. 1114 Washington Blvd.; 313-442-1600; www.bookcadillacwestin.com
