What to (or maybe not) watch: The Neon Demon

Stay home this weekend and binge-watch TV, because our movie critics don't have a lot of positive things to say about what's in theatres.

Globe film critic Kate Taylor gave The Neon Demon one and a half stars, on the grounds that while it's incredibly stylish, it's also laughably grotesque -- but it's tone-deaf and unfunny. Director Nicolas Winding Refn seems "too ready to divide his female characters into whore and madonnas," she writes, so he perhaps isn't the best person to helm a reinvention of the notoriously sexist horror genre. Read the review.

Then there's Independence Day: Resurgence, which got a whopping zero stars from Globe film editor Barry Hertz. It's a sequel to a blockbuster that -- like so many others these days -- didn't need a sequel. It's "one of the most aggressively stupid blockbusters ever made," he writes, "a painful exercise in Hollywood greed and artistic incompetence on every level." Read the review.

On the other hand, Globe television critic John Doyle recommends American Gothic, part of this summer's "joyride of trash." "This series, which could be wrapped up easily in six hours with commercials, goes on and on for 13 episodes," he writes. "Something to look forward to, and relish." Read the review.

What to read: White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide; and White Trash: The 400-year Untold History of Class in America

If you're still trying to wrap your head around Donald Trump's "MAKE AMERICA GREAT" baseball cap, Globe Books columnist John Semley says these two books are a good place to start. They both respond to the question that Trump's hat sidesteps: "What if there's no past glory to restore? What if America always was, from its very inception, a rank bog of structural inequality, racial and social divide, and arrogant, undeserved exceptionalism?" he writes. Read the review.

What to drink: Wine that tastes like smoky bacon (suitable for vegetarians)

It's real. Red wines that have a bacon-ish flavour aren't even uncommon, writes wine and spirits columnist Beppi Crosariol. He also lists some options to sip while you're at home not going to the movies. Read the column.

What to cook: Sopa de lima

That's Yucatan-style lime soup to you English speakers. The recipe, taken from Broth & Stock from the Nourished Kitchen, includes a whole lot more than limes. With simple ingredients and big flavour, it's a perfect weekend dish. Read the recipe.
