Photo tip for May 31: The cleaner adds scale to the image as the roof of the building plays off the negative space of the sky. When shooting something large or small try to add another element that will help the viewer realize the size of the object.
Photo tip for May 30: This detail shot of the coal workers feet gives the reader a great deal of information about the man and his life. Try looking for detail pictures that can help tell the story.
Photo tip for May 29: The boy in mid-air balanced off by the man getting shaved in the mirror makes for excellent composition. Try using other elements to complement your main subject and make your imags more interesting.
Photo tip for May 28: Exposing for the highlights in this image creates a really nice silhouette with the cyclist with the water as a backdrop. Look for scenes where you have great highlights and great shadows and try exposing for each to see what happens.
Photo tip for May 25: Stephen Caissie was barbecuing on warm Sunday evening in Toronto when he noticed the strong composition of lines, shapes and colour on the grill. He grabbed his camera and captured this shot just as flames leapt from the barbecue. Why we chose it: Why wait for the food to hit a plate before shooting it. A slow shutter and some great light make for a very tasty image.
