One captivating image a day, the reason it was chosen and how you can shoot similar pictures

WHY WE PICKED IT: Raking light, the coarse texture of the cobs of golden corn and placement of the subject in the centre of a sea of hard work combine to make this a striking photograph.
A gaggle of geese stand in a pasture near the village of Edlitz, in Lower Austria, some 75 km south of Vienna. WHY WE PICKED IT: Using mostly sky in this frame works. You get just enough of the geese in the frame.
A surfer falls into a wave while surfing in Cardiff, California. WHY WE PICKED IT: The timing is perfect here with the waves just about to crash down on surfer. Always use a faster shutter speed to freeze the action.
An Afghan man holds his prayer beads as walks past brick kilns outside Kabul. WHY WE PICKED IT: Great time of day to create a warm, golden colour to photo. Nice to have the man in foreground to add to an already interesting landscape.
Lisa Morris shot The Birds with her iPhone 4 using the app Camera+, then brought it into Instagram and applied the lo-fi filter. WHY WE PICKED IT: We selected it as the best submission taken by a camera phone because the simplicity of the image drew us in. The birds flying in from the left and the ones sitting in the tree make this a striking photo.
