Migrants and refugees wait to be registered by the authorities before continuing their train journey to western Europe at a refugee transit camp in Slavonski Brod, Croatia. NATO defence ministers convened a two-day meeting in Brussels to discuss current defense issues and whether the Alliance should take a more direct role in dealing with its gravest migrant crisis since World War II. Hundreds of thousands people fleeing Syria, Afghanistan and other war-torn or impoverished countries arrived in Europe last year, often risking their lives to cross the Aegean in overloaded boats. Hundreds have died in the attempt.
