The Sony World Photography Awards recognizes and rewards the best contemporary photography from around the world. The following are a selection of winning images in the professional categories. These striking photos show the photographer's perspectives on issues as varied as the ebola crisis, mental illness, and receding glaciers.

Under EU regulations a prisoner who is married or in a relationship has the right to receive private visits which takes place in a separate room inside the prison. Cosmin Bumbutz photographed the "intimate rooms" used for the visits inside Romanian prisons including this one in Tulcea Penitentiary.

Molotov Cocktails have been the weapon of choice for the EuroMaidan protestors in Kiev. The protestors were able to defend their barricades.
