One man is dead after a stabbing at a Chinese wellness clinic in Calgary that police are calling "domestic in nature."

The attack took place on Thursday at about 2:30 p.m. at the Perpetual Wellness Chinese Medicine Centre north of downtown. The victim was deceased when police arrived, police said in a statement.

Calgary police arrested one man at the scene after treating his injuries, while a woman with injuries that are not considered life threatening was taken to hospital.

There are no details about the suspect. Police cannot release the victim's identity until next of kin have been notified.

Several lanes of a major Calgary street were blocked off at one point as officers investigated what happened at the Central Landmark Building. A salesman with an optician business in the building said no one was allowed to leave for a couple of hours.

"By the time it all started, the cops actually cordoned off everything, so it was basically on lockdown. We couldn't leave," said Nick Wong, who works for Essential Eyewear. "Between 2 and 4-ish, there was basically yellow tape everywhere. Upstairs was basically off limits."

The man whom police arrested, who has not yet been charged, was still at the clinic when officers arrived.

"He was calm and co-operative," and taken into custody without incident, Inspector Dean LaGrange told reporters Thursday afternoon.

The deceased, the injured woman and the suspect all knew each other, police said, adding that the male victim, who police believe owns the clinic, was the target of the attack. The three are believed to be about 40 to 50 years old.

"It was not random," Insp. LaGrange said, adding it is too early to determine motive. "You can draw your own conclusions being domestic in nature."

The alleged attacker and the woman may have or had been involved in a relationship, the officer said. "To my knowledge, that is what the onset of the investigation is showing right now."

Police do not know if the woman worked at the clinic. Asked whether she was targeted, Insp. LaGrange said, "No, not to my knowledge."
