Doctor Who
Friday, CBC, 9 p.m.
Exec producer Russell T. Davies has some fun with the Season 4 opener, which he also wrote. Catherine Tate returns as Donna Noble from The Runaway Bride episode. Donna meets the Doctor (David Tennant) while investigating a company marketing a revolutionary diet pill with the slogan, "The fat just walks away." The episode's "monsters," cute toddling blobs of human fat called Adipose, are the creation of the alien Miss Foster, an intergalactic send-up of Supernanny Jo Frost. Also watch for a brief cameo by Billie Piper as Rose.

Torchwood
Friday, Space, 10 p.m.
The Doctor Who spinoff grabbed us from the start of Season 2 with its campily debauched premiere featuring a deliciously torrid love/hate fest between Captain Jack and an old flame played by James Marsters (Spike on Buffy). It's all about Owen (Burn Gorman) in tonight's melancholic A Day in the Death episode as the doctor fears he's destined to die over and over again, for all eternity.

The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget
Saturday, Comedy, 10 p.m.
And now for something completely different. Normally celebrity roasts should be avoided at all costs. But tonight's skeezfest for the dad from Full House has a singular redeeming quality: Canadian Norm Macdonald. His shtick is so subversive the routine leaves many of the so-called yuksters in the room befuddled. Don't want to sit through the whole rigmaroast? You'll find a video clip of Macdonald's set at www.videogum.com.
