Angelina Jolie: Hit or miss?
Shortly after her thigh first emerged from an Atelier Versace dress, someone started the Twitter handle, Angiesrightleg. It now has upwards of 8,000 followers. Then, before accepting their award, the The Descendants’ screenwriters struck a femur-flaunting pageant pose. Forget the dress, someone give her limb an honourary supporting Oscar.

Rooney Mara: Hit or miss?
Fashion experts hoped the Dragon Tattoo star would pick Givenchy, the historic couture house whose creative director Riccardo Tisci isn’t afraid to go a touch punk. Perhaps they influenced her decision. But of all that was available, she chose a gown boasting fender flares along the bustline? Solve that mystery.

Natalie Portman: Hit or miss?
Natalie Portman is so beautiful, it’s easy to look past the vintage Christian Dior dress, which gaped in the chest area and required better steaming toward the hemline. Add in the necklace, far too formal, and she looks like she’s playing dress-up.

Meryl Streep: Hit or miss?
Evidently, Meryl Streep dressed the part of a (three-time) winner. Her golden gown was made using eco-certified fabric (in accordance with the Green Carpet Challenge initiative)—a first for French fashion house Lanvin. Notably, Streep’s shoes were Salvatore Ferragamo, Margaret Thatcher’s preferred footwear.

Missi Pyle: Hit or miss?
Also rising to the Green Carpet Challenge, actress Missi Pyle told red carpet interviewers that her Valentina Delfino gown was made from "cruelty free silkworms." Beyond the LOL-ness of those three words, the unfortunate design sets eco fashion back three years.

Michelle Williams: Hit or miss?
Is there a peplum fan page on Facebook yet? Because Michelle Williams, wearing a coral (there was much debate on its exact hue) dress by Louis Vuitton stands as a perfect poster girl for the flared and pleated fabric accent, a trend that we’ll be sick of before it even hits stores. But that hot pink minaudière is aces.

Jessica Chastain: Hit or miss?
Jessica Chastain was sitting in the front row of the Armani Privé couture show last month when she received word of her nomination. So I wasn’t expecting her to turn up in Alexander McQueen. The filigreed embroidery is elaborate but not memorable. This was not her winning night.

Stacy Keibler: Hit or miss?
A sculpted rose-shaped whirlpool planted on the hip of a liquid gold dress (designed by Marchesa) is exactly what you would expect a former professional wrestler to wear to her first Academy Awards, right? Not that she was trying to upstage George Clooney or anything.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Hit or miss?
If anyone was capable of converting sparkle traditionalists to the pared-back, no-fuss glamour camp, Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford succeeded last night. This was the gown equivalent of a case study house—a design purist’s dream.

Emma Stone: Hit or miss?
Who else wanted to reach through the TV and untie that uptight bow? Neck issues notwithstanding, there was lovely movement to Emma Stone’s Giambattista Valli couture gown. And of course, the moment she opens her mouth, she is a gift to the red carpet.

Judy Greer: Hit or miss?
This is a surprisingly sleek, contoured design by Monique Lhuillier, typically known for her wedding dresses confections. Judy Greer was probably just thankful she could move and sit comfortably while getting significantly more dolled up than her Hawaiian housewife look.

Glenn Close: Hit or miss?
How fitting! Nominated for playing a man in Albert Nobbs, Glenn Close shows up sporting a tuxedo jacket atop her Zac Posen gown. In a post-boyfriend blazer age, this is a grown-up, recherché way of a) not taking the red carpet too seriously b) managing any arm concerns.

Jonah Hill: Hit or miss?
Black-on-black is slimming, sure. But Jonah Hill has been looking good lately, regardless of any sartorial illusions. Had he paired the Ermenegildo Zegna suit with a classic white dress shirt, he might not have looked like he was trying so hard.
