I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
In his high-school graduation address, Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust) professes his love for cheerleader Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere) and insults her boyfriend (Shawn Roberts), who spends the rest of director Chris Columbus's wearying film trying to beat Denis to a pulp. It's not a good sign that, in the extras, screenwriter Larry Doyle says his source novel was “more comic” than the film. Rust improvises a song about “peanut butter toast” that may rank as the worst bonus feature ever.
North by Northwest (1959)
Director Alfred Hitchcock and screenwriter Ernest Lehman play the audience like a fiddle in this witty action thriller about an advertising executive (Cary Grant) mistaken for a spy. Eva Marie Saint co-stars as the mystery woman. Expect the crop-dusting scene – a long, wordless sequence in which Grant is attacked from above with nowhere obvious to hide – to look expansive in Blu-ray. Bonus features from an earlier DVD are accompanied by a “digibook” about the film.
