Before it sadly closed its doors, McNally Robinson Booksellers in Toronto had planned a fund-raising dinner on behalf of Walrus magazine at the bookstore's location at the Shops at Don Mills. Now, in spite of its woes, the bookseller is going ahead with the dinner at a new venue: Jamie Kennedy At The Gardiner (111 Queen's Park, Toronto) on Feb. 25.
The $125 price includes a meal prepared by Jamie Kennedy, one of the city's top chefs, and a talk by Jeff Rubin, author of the bestseller Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller. The proceeds from the dinner will go to The Walrus Foundation, the registered non-profit charitable foundation that publishes The Walrus. The Walrus, for those who don't know, is a general-interest monthly magazine that publishes the best writers in the country.
Without putting too fine a point on it, The Walrus, Jamie Kennedy and McNally Robinson are partners in misery, having all had their share of business difficulties in recent times.
Good to see them fighting back.

CORRECTION: McNally Robinson Booksellers is not involved with the dinner at Jamie Kennedy At The Gardiner. That was a misunderstanding on my part. The event was originally conceived with McNally Robinson, but, as David Leonard, manager of special events at The Walrus Foundation, says in an e-mail, "We do still have a relationship with McNally Robinson, and have Walrus Reads events coming up with them in the west, but The Walrus Eats event is just us and Jamie Kennedy now."
My apologies to all.
