Ash-tastrophe claims festival author

Word has come from Random House that Alexander McCall Smith is cancelling his upcoming North American book tour because of the travel disruptions caused by the airborne ash spewing from the still active (and still unpronouncable) Iceland volcano, Eyjafjallajokull.

McCall Smith's decision means he won't be appearing in Toronto at the Globe and Mail Open House book festival (Apr. 30-May 2).

Scott Sellers at Random says he doesn't expect any other authors to cancel for the same reason, as they are all coming from Canada and the U.S.

However, he says Amy Bloom has dropped out for personal reasons.

McCall Smith isn't the only British author trapped by the ash-ageddon.

And don't even get me started about the London Book Fair.
