Furtive children's author Lemony Snicket is fleeing the grip of HarperCollins, the firm that helped him sell 60 million copies of his A Series of Unfortunate Events books, for the embrace of a rival publisher, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, for whom he has agreed to chronicle five more unfortunate events.
Industry observers say Snicket, also known as Daniel Handler, was seen crossing the street on the trail of Winnipeg-born editor Susan Rich, who helped bring all 13 of his adventures to print while at HarperCollins - but who left recently to assume the newly created position of editor-at-large at LBYR.
