The eighth annual awards honouring excellence in direction in Canadian television and film were handed out on the weekend in Toronto, with Kari Skogland, Norma Bailey and Holly Dale among those taking home prizes. Skogland won best direction (feature film) for Fifty Dead Men Walking, Bailey best direction (TV movie/miniseries) for The Capture of the Green River Killer and Dale best direction (TV series) for her work on Flashpoint. The film Air India 182 was awarded the first Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary.
The Directors Guild of Canada gala event on Saturday also honoured Carol Spier (veteran production designer with films such as Eastern Promises, A History of Violence) with a lifetime-achievement award, and assistant director Avrel Fisher (Wonderfalls, Wind at My Back) with a distinguished service award. Paul Gross's war drama Passchendaele took the prize for best team feature film, Flashpoint won for best team TV drama, Heartland for best team family series, and Corner Gas for best team comedy.
