Da Vinci’s Inquest

During its seven-season run from 1998 to 2005, this Canadian-made drama never steered clear of contentious storylines. Set and filmed in Vancouver, the CBC series starred the fine Canadian actor Nicholas Campbell as Dominic Da Vinci, a former RCMP undercover agent turned crusading coroner. And could Da Vinci cause a commotion! In tonight’s episode, more than two dozen street workers have gone missing and are presumed dead. Da Vinci stirs up the corridors of power with his public statement endorsing a red-light district.

Making House
W, 8 p.m.


Debuting tonight, this new series follows the efforts of Jennifer Reid to put down roots. The former journalist and interior designer and her contractor husband Chad are trying to completely renovate their new home, which is not a simple matter considering they have three young kids and number four is on the way. In the opener, the family prepares to move into the rental apartment where they’ll live until their dream house is completed. Chad is busy running off to job sites, which leaves Jenn in charge of getting all the bedrooms ready before the kids come home.

The Voice
NBC, CTV, 9 p.m.


Who could have guessed this show would immediately fill the void left by the conclusion of "American Idol"? Since launching last month, the search for America’s next pop star has surpassed all ratings expectations – in both Canada and the U.S. The live performance phase begins tonight, with the top vocalists from each celebrity coach’s team competing against each other in a live show. In a twist from "Idol", the voting public will determine which vocalist on each team will be saved. One way or another, though, some contestants will be going home tonight, so expect tears to flow.

The First 48: Missing Persons
A&E, 11 p.m.


Launched a few weeks ago, this spinoff series from the makers of "The First 48" focuses on police looking for missing persons, hence the title. In tonight’s new episode, three veteran detectives search for a straight-A college student who was last seen walking along a deserted waterfront. The same detectives also conduct a search for an alleged gang member who disappeared after a drug deal went bad. Can you blame him?

MOVIE


Great Expectations
TCM, 8 p.m. ET; 5 p.m. PT

Based on the novel by Charles Dickens, this British movie is required viewing for the serious cineaste. The 1946 film recounts the life and times of Pip (John Mills), a young lad from a dubious background who becomes a gentleman via rich life experiences. Pip’s learning curve includes encounters with the odd Herbert Pocket (Alec Guinness), the escaped convict Magwitch (Finlay Currie) and the dotty Miss Havisham (Martita Hunt). Like Dickens’s story, it’s a classic.
