A baby admitted to Vancouver hospital earlier this month may have been the victim of an aggravated assault, Vancouver police say.

An eight-week-old baby boy, whose identity hasn't been made public, was admitted to hospital on March 20. After being examined, both the Vancouver Police and B.C.'s Ministry of Children and Family Development began investigations.

Last night, the infant remained in hospital and was listed in critical but stable condition.

"[He]may have been the victim of an aggravated assault," VPD spokeswoman Constable Jana McGuinness said in a statement. She declined to offer further details, including whether any charges were laid.
