Not long in his new job as winemaker at CedarCreek, Darryl Brooker took a big chance. Riesling grapes usually mature on the vine until late in the season, but last year he liked the way they tasted much earlier, so had them picked – to the surprise of peers. The result is a wonderfully fresh and limey German-style Riesling with low alcohol (11.3 per cent), bracing acidity and a little sweetness for balance. Riesling goes exceptionally well with summer dishes: picnic ham, chicken and tuna salad sandwiches, corn on the cob, fresh crab and prawns. It’s perfect for brunch with egg dishes. Rieslings are usually subtle, so seldom work with red meats. Available at B.C. Liquor Stores and private wine shops.
