A British Columbia woman whose drunk driving killed a university student have been sentenced to three years in a federal penitentiary.

Stephanie Beckley, 27, of Kamloops, B.C., drove her Jeep through a yellow light, smashing into the side of a Honda Civic which was turning left.

Laura Chee, 23, a pharmacy student at the University of Alberta, was driving the Honda Civic and died of her injuries.

Court heard victim impact statements from Ms. Chee's family and loved ones before sentencing.

Lillian Chee told court her sister's death has sentenced her family to an "unnecessary punishment" for the rest of their lives.

Ms. Chee's boyfriend, David Lam, said the love of his life and his identity was taken from him by Ms. Beckley's actions, leaving him without direction.

Ms. Beckley will also be banned from driving for five years after she gets out of prison.
