Fire at one marina, vandal at another cause headaches for boat owners Add to ...

Several boat owners at two marinas on B.C.’s South Coast should be checking with their insurance companies after unrelated overnight incidents.

A fire at Park Isle Marine in Sooke, west of Victoria, has destroyed three boats and damaged a building in the boat yard.

All three vessels were on land, having work done at the boat yard when flames broke out just after 5 a.m. Friday, quickly spreading to a nearby shop building.

No one was hurt and a cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Vancouver Police say a 31-year-old man is in custody after several boats were vandalized late Thursday night at the Coal Harbour marina in downtown Vancouver.

Officers had to use a police dog and the emergency response team to arrest the man when he barricaded himself in the engine room of one boat after smashing it and several others with a large hook, causing significant damage.
