Most musicians dream of selling three million records over their entire careers – but last year, famed country crossover artist Taylor Swift did it in a single month.
She is a megastar by any measure: a seven-time Grammy winner (and the youngest ever to land Album of the Year), the only female artist to ever have two albums sell a million in their first week, and an artist who has sold a breathtaking 26 million albums and 75 million digital downloads worldwide.
Not bad for a 23-year-old who grew up on a Pennsylvania Christmas tree farm and spent her weekends performing at local fairs and karaoke contests, then famously persuaded her parents to move to Nashville so she could pursue her dream.
Now on a 45-city tour in support of Red, an album that includes chart toppers We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble, Ms. Swift has also experienced her share of jabs over her adorable awkwardness, her blink-blink girliness, and her reported romances – among them celebs Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Joe Jonas and One Direction's Harry Styles, many of whom have become grist for her song mill.
But as Frank Sinatra once said, "The best revenge is massive success" – and her fiercely loyal fans (or "Swifties") will be out in force for her stadium-sized show at BC Place Saturday night, which will itself be lit up in red for the occasion.
"Sooooo excited, going to be the best night of my life!!!" wrote one follower on Twitter. Tweeted another, "Bittersweet. Having to wait till Saturday to see Taylor Swift … But going to Vancouver to see her #waytooexcited."
"I feel so lucky that I have such a personal relationship with my fans," Ms. Swift said at this year's Billboard Awards. "It's been an amazing friendship and bond that we've had over the last couple of years. And I can't even really define it. I'm just very grateful to have it."
