Griffin and Maverick, two puppies who have become the latest recruits to the Vancouver Police Department, visited the schoolchildren who named them this week.

The force announced Griffin's name was submitted by a Grade 4 class at Kerrisdale Elementary, while Maverick got his moniker from Grade 6 students at Vancouver College.

The contest required participating classes to come together to submit one name per class. The force said in a news release there were more than 830 entries. Some students put forward duo names, including Sherlock and Watson and Cuff and Link.

Then there were what the force called "memorable single names:" Meatballs, Donut and General Greivous, a Star Wars villain.
