A father and daughter duo that failed to check in after an overnight camping trip in Whistler has been found dead.

The 49-year-old father and 10-year-old daughter, both from North Vancouver, had planned to camp out on Blackcomb Mountain Saturday night then ski tour the following day, said Whistler RCMP Sergeant Rob Knapton. When they failed to check in at 4 p.m. on Sunday, police were notified.

Whistler RCMP activated local search and rescue and Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol, both of which searched from about 7 to 11 p.m., when it became unsafe. The search resumed at 6:30 a.m. Monday and involved teams from Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton and Lions Bay, as well as an air component.

At about 11:30 a.m., searchers located a tent above an area known as "the Windlip."

"The tent was located at the base of a rock face," Sgt. Knapton said in a news release. "From our investigation, it appears that a large boulder fell from the rock face at some point, landing on the tent with both occupants inside and killing them."

The victims have been identified as Trevor Norma and his daughter Zarah.
